Friday day evening proved to be the most consistent night thus far for the Mr. Deals 6c Sport Mod. Crew chief Randy Uppinghouse said, "this was Bob's most consistent night from start to finish since coming into sport mods." The night started a little shaky but we continued to improve as the event unfolded.
In hot laps two cars spun out in front of the 6c, leaving the entire track blocked, forcing Cowman to run into the side of the # 2 Jimmie Fierge car. The front bumper bent and the "Rons Garage" nose experienced a little damage but was no worse for the wear. Everyone was able to drive away from the early pre-race mishap.
The heat race was a bit rough also. Starting in the front row of the heat, Cowman was pushed to the top side losing 4 spots before the first lap was complete. That put him at the back for the remainder of the race. A valuable lesson was learned about starting in the front row and how to avoid a push job from the pole sitter.
Starting the feature in 22nd position was the furthest back the 6c has started a race this season. Usually the back represents wrecks and rookies, a place that no one wants to be. A fifteen lap sprint gives a driver little time to sit and wait. You have to get up on the wheel and systematically make moves forward.
We were able to to move up six spots in 15 laps to finish 16th of 24 cars. It gave the 6c valuable seat time working in traffic and learning different ways to pass people.
In our first year of Modified racing, we have made improvements. The overall experience has been good and the three of us have regrouped. We are looking to build from what we have learned this year. It hasn't been an easy season and we missed Ron the entire time.
The 6c will be back in action on Friday evening August 17th at Lee County Speedway.
